Analytical Tools Applicable for an Editorial

(This one was submitted in Discourse Analysis class)

Editorial from Gulf News January 14, 2012
For the good of the environment

Private companies must also take up car-free campaign to curb pollution.

At least 3,000 employees in various government departments will leave their cars at home and take public transport on January 18 to support "Car Free Day" in Dubai. The annual event is expected to save the environment from at least 10 tonnes of carbon emissions. Transport emissions are responsible for 47 per cent of the air pollution in Dubai.

While the government takes the lead, private sector companies that employ many more people must also take up the campaign. Besides reducing carbon emissions, the day will also encourage people to use public transport. Dubai has international standard public transport services, which are cheap and convenient for consumers. Reducing traffic and the time wasted on roads by goods and people is also a great saving for the economy. It is hoped that the annual event will become daily practice for many commuters, to the benefit of the environment and the emirate.

The applicable analytical tools are:

1.      Context

-          Time: January 14, 2012 (Action will be done on January 18, 2012)
-          Location: Dubai
-          Audience: Dubai residence, general society, and global audience
The editorial was published on January 14 2012 on gulfnews.com. Since it is online site, everybody all over the world can read the article, even though the content is aimed for the local residence.

2.      Topic choice

-          The topic choice in the ‘For the good of the environment’ is about saving environment.
It is clear that the editorial is talking about saving the environment. We can know it from the title and the rest of the text, which explaining about government’s initiative to create “car free day” in order to reduce air pollution caused by the emission of fuel burning.

3.      Modality

This editorial uses two modals.
-          Will, in various government departments will leave their car at home.
the day will also encourage people to use public transport.
the annual event will become daily practice for many commuters,
-          Must, in private sector companies that employ many more people must also take up the campaign.
-          Private companies must also take up car-free campaign to curb pollution.

The modal ‘will’ is well known for future modal. It means that ‘will’ express something which can be true in the future. In those three sentences, the modal will indicates the action that is going to be taken by the government departments. In the next two sentences, ‘will’ express hope for the good impact of car free day.
The modal ‘must’ indicate something is necessity or obligatory. In this case, the action led by government should also be done by the private companies for the good of environment.

4.      Lexicalization

-Curb, in Private companies must also take up car-free campaign to curb pollution.”

The writer uses the word ‘curb’ instead of ‘prevent’ or ‘reduce’. It is may be because he or she aware that the pollution nowadays is no longer can be prevent or reduce.

5.      Syntactic Structure

The editorial is written both in active and passive forms. The writer uses active form to show the action done and what should be done. For example, various government departments will leave their cars at home and take public transport.” In the other hand, the writer uses passive voice for hope and expectation, such in It is hoped that the annual event will become daily practice for many commuters…” I assume that the writer is confident with the government action and not with the effect on daily commuters.

6.      Coherence
There is a good coherence between the title and the two paragraph.
Title: For the good of the environment. The first sentence of the first paragraph: At least 3,000 employees in various government departments will leave their cars at home and take public transport on January 18 to support "Car Free Day" in Dubai. The first sentence in the second paragraph: While the government takes the lead, private sector companies that employ many more people must also take up the campaign.
The title precisely concludes the content on the text. The first paragraph focuses on action taken by the government institution and the effect of the action. The two sentences have causal coherence. The second paragraph hopes the private sector will do the same, and also explain about the good thing of leaving car at home. Therefore, the editorial has a good coherence both between the sentences and the paragraphs.

7.      Argumentation

-          The argument of editorial’s writer is in the sentence ‘’ While the government takes the lead, private sector companies that employ many more people must also take up the campaign.
The writer here aims to encourage private sector to do the same. He says that it is necessity that the private sectors also leave their car at home.

8.      Presupposition
The annual event is expected to save the environment from at least 10 tonnes of carbon emissions. Transport emissions are responsible for 47 per cent of the air pollution in Dubai.
From the two sentences I can infer that “car free day” had been done before as it’s said as “annual event”. And also, Dubai has a high number of vehicles as it responsible for 10 tons of carbon emission as well as 47 per cent of the air pollution.

9.      Speech act

-          Persuasive and informative.
The text is to encourage readers to leave their car at home and take public transport, as well as to inform the upcoming government action.

10.  Polarization

It is clear that the text has environmental ideology (environmentalism). It encourages every reader to save environment.
